Why FREE TRIALS don’t work
There was a time when “free trials” were the go-to way to try a gym before committing. While they were popular, over time they became widely misused.
From the client perspective, we saw people jump into sessions that weren’t appropriate for their fitness level. This often resulted in injuries, excessive soreness, and frustration — sometimes even impacting their ability to work or train consistently. Many left feeling discouraged and confused about what their body actually needed.
From a business perspective, free trials were also frequently abused. They became a way for visitors to access facilities and classes at no cost, without genuine intent to join. This ultimately affects the sustainability of a small business and the quality of service we can provide to our members.
Simply put — free trials don’t serve you, your goals, or your body.
That’s why we don’t offer free trials at our gym.
Instead, we offer a Free No-Sweat Intro https://www.edgefitandwell.com/
This is perfect if you are:
• New to the gym
• Returning after a break
• Unsure where to start
During your No-Sweat Intro, we:
Show you around the gym
Sit down and chat about your goals
Match you with the right services and programs
This ensures you’re not thrown into an environment that could leave you injured, overwhelmed, or discouraged before you even begin your journey.
For those who already train regularly and just want to drop in, we offer casual visit options at standard casual rates.
Our goal is simple — to set you up for success, safety, and long-term results.
Alstonville is our world
When we first took over Alstonville Holistic Gym, we rebranded it Edge Fitness Alstonville.
Because, at the time, we lived on the edge… and we fully intended to drag you there with us too. (Haven’t times changed. We were slightly crazy BUT fun)
Most of you wouldn’t know this, but before Edge Fitness Alstonville, we were right there in the main street – where Pure Fitness is now.
We were called My Own Gym. (story for another time)
So being the fresh-faced dreamers we were, we paid an extraordinary amount of money to a fancy Sydney marketing company to “help us build the brand.”
Back then it was Me, Rachel and Janelle running the show… and apparently according to this Sydney company, we knew absolutely nothing about marketing.
Nothing.
The year was 2014.
After handing over what felt like a house deposit, we had a lightbulb moment:
City companies take your money… but they can’t bottle your heart. They were not great.
So what did we do?
We grabbed the gym kids.
We grabbed our members.
We made our own budget ad.
And then we basically showered Alstonville with it.
Events
Street Parades
Roundabouts
The Plaza
The Plaza carpark (the management - loved us..)
And here’s the thing… we weren’t trying to take over the Northern Rivers.
We weren’t trying to become some mega gym empire.
We just wanted to make a few ripples in little old Alstonville.
And that’s where our first big marketing mistake happened…
We spent big-city money on a small-town mission.
And honestly?
It was one of the best mistakes we ever made.
Because what we learnt was this:
We didn’t need Sydney.
We didn’t need flashy agencies.
We just needed our people, our energy, and our town.
And the funniest part?
That marketing drive…
The DIY one…
The one that got people talking..
Was the most fun we’ve ever had.
No boardrooms.
No buzzwords.
Just sweat, laughs, and a whole lot of Edge Fitness Alstonville.
Check out our Ad. It gives off Fat Pizza (Aussie TV show). It brought life to our little community of Alstonville.
These awesome kids were 15 back then.
And we are still here.
Enjoy this trip down 11 years ago.
Manava - The Perfect Green space
The Rangoon Climber
When we first imagined the courtyard at Manava, the purpose was crystal clear.
We wanted a space where people could come, ground themselves on soft green grass, and be held by lush tropical plants — a living sanctuary in the middle of Alstonville.
And that’s exactly what now exists.
But what most people don’t realise is that every single plant in Manava has a story.
I won’t share the stories of them all — not today —
but there is one plant I want to tell you about.
The Rangoon Climber.
Here it is in the photo — the vine with bold, pink and red flowers, the kind that perfumes the air so gently you almost don’t notice yourself inhaling it. Or you may have noticed it lovingly placed on your towel before a massage or sauna or near your water in the sauna.
This plant is deeply connected to why Manava carries its name, and why this space means more than just “a nice garden at the gym.”
When I went looking for this plant, I searched everywhere.
Every nursery. Every grower.
Most people said the same thing:
“It won’t grow here.”
“Wrong climate.”
“No point trying.”
But I wasn’t taking no.
Because for me, the Rangoon Climber was more than a plant — it is a memory.
There is a very special photo — the second photo (it is the only picture I have of my dad and I) ever taken of me with both of my parents and brother (no.8 child).
In it, I’m leaning against my mother, my hand over my heart, smiling in that innocent way only kids can.
And behind us?
A massive Rangoon Climber, fully wrapped around our family home in Tonga — so big, so alive, you could smell it before you saw it.
Sweet.
Exotic.
Mesmerising.
That word — mesmerising — anchors me back to that child:
carefree,
safe,
nestled in love,
the youngest of nine,
a miracle baby who surprised everyone, including my mum and dad.
Some nights, I sit alone in Manava.
I watch the climber move gently in the breeze and breathe in that same perfume.
And in that quiet, I speak to my parents.
I thank them for the selfless act of leaving me in Australia so I could have a better life.
That scent connects me back to them — to home, to culture, to love, to strength.
That is why Manava exists.
Because Manava isn’t just a name.
In the Pacific, Manava means strength.
In Tongan, it means Breathe.
Here at Edge, Manava means:
“Come sit. Be still. Listen.
Your body will tell you what it needs to heal.”
So if you find yourself in the garden one day — alone or after a workout —
sit in silence for a moment.
Let the perfume of the Rangoon climber wrap around you.
Let it speak to “your” memories, your heart, your past.
Let it open you up.
Let it soften you.
Let it remind you that you too are a miracle —
and that you are, truly, fxxing amazing.**
Our little green space in the heart of Alstonville isn’t just a courtyard.
It’s a sacred green space.
A place to meet, to work, to reset, to breathe… and to heal.
This is just one plant’s story.
There are many more growing quietly waiting for their story to be told.
I thought I’d tell this story first so you know what the intention of this space is all about. This climber is the first plant to greet you at the entry.
With love.
